Fish & People
BOMOSA aquaculture and its associated socio-economic model is designed to solve problems in rural communities, as well as strengthening the economy in a number of ways:
- Supplementing capture fishery production of already overexploited fish from natural freshwater and marine waters.
- Using low protein fish food mainly from agricultural by-products for producing indigenous species such as Nile Tilapia.
- Utilizing the potential of insects (esp. mosquitoes) as additional fish feed, which contributes to solving public health issues such as malaria.
- Increasing food security through localized production of cheap animal protein for rural population, thus improving the dietary nutrition and the quality of life of rural families.
- Generating new employment and additional income in the rural areas for smallhold farmers and fishermen.
- Introducing new synergies of sustainable rural development through integration of agriculture and aquaculture.
